Skin Problems That Can Affect Children

Skin Problems That Can Affect Children

Yes, even kids deal with skin issues. Here’s what you can do about it.

Skin problems don’t just affect teens and adults. In fact, babies and young children can also deal with a variety of dermatological conditions that our Santa Monica, CA, dermatologists can diagnose and treat when necessary. Here are the most common types of skin problems in children and how to handle them.

Viral Skin Infections

It is possible that your child’s skin problems are due to a viral infection. While some of these infections will go away on their own, others require immediate medical attention.

One of the most common types of viral skin rashes is known as pityriasis rosea, which is completely harmless and doesn’t usually require treatment. It causes mild red spots or patches on the trunk of the body that lasts several weeks and will go away once the body fights the infection.

However, if your child develops itchy or inflamed skin lesions or sores on their body, it’s important that you talk with your child’s dermatologist. The good news is that many of these infections such as measles and chickenpox can be prevented by getting your child vaccinated.

Parasitic Skin Infections

Many parasitic infections are contagious, making this type of infection more common among school-aged children. Common parasitic skin infections include scabies and lice. Common symptoms associated with scabies include severe itching, a small pustule-like rash and crusted skin. Lice tend to infect the scalp and may result in intense itching. Both can be treated with medication.

Fungal Infections

Fungus lives all around us, so it’s actually fairly easy to pick up a fungal infection. Common childhood fungal infections include tinea versicolor and ringworm. Tinea versicolor will cause dark or white patches of skin, typically on the chest or stomach. Ringworm often causes a red, circular raised lesion that itches. It’s also possible for children to develop fungal infections within the nails, which can lead to brittle, thickening or yellowing nails.

Dermatitis

Sometimes red, itchy dry patches of skin may be caused by atopic dermatitis or eczema. Dermatitis is also responsible for diaper rash. Most children will grow out of this condition. In the meantime, it’s important to find out what triggers your child’s symptoms so you can avoid flare-ups. This is something that your dermatologist can help you determine.

If you are concerned about a worrisome rash or other skin problems your child is dealing with don’t hesitate to call Santa Monica Dermatology Group at (310) 829-4484 or book an appointment online.
