In mid June, 2011, the FDA announced new Sunscreen guidelines. For years, there has been concern amongst the dermatology community that previous sunscreen claims were leading to a false sense of security for the consumer. Starting in 2012, Sunscreen labels will only go to a SPF of 50 and will be labeled as "broad spectrum" if they protect against both UVA and UVB rays. There will be labels for "water resistent"  which will indicate that product has been tested after 40 or 80 minutes in the water.  The3r There  There will no longer be waterproof, sweatproof  or sunblock labels. At this point in time, there are still investigations into the safety of the spray forms of sunscreen and investigations evaluating the safety of a couple of specific ingredients.
